Our tax needs range from the simple to the complex (multiple investments, self-employed, rental properties...). It is challenging to know how to access which CPA services based on our personal circumstances, particularly as our needs change.

In the past taxes were expensive or online-DIY with few options in the middle. If you have not looked at online services recently, you should.

Unless otherwise noted, the links in this post will direct you to another website / resource outside of Anasova.

1. Taxes have been simplified (for most tax payers)

  • Under the 2018 tax overhaul it is anticipated that 90% of tax payers will take the standard deduction.
  • If you plan to take the standard deduction and have W2 income, your taxes should be straightforward.
  • The cost will be low (potentially free) and you will receive your refund quickly.

2. Online solutions have vastly improved over the past decade.

  • Online solutions now offer guarantees and personal assistance from live CPAs.
  • Our recommendation is TurboTax which offers free, paid, and CPA-assisted programs.

Other solutions:

  • Credit Karma provides free returns
  • TaxFyle provides assisted / CPA-prepared returns priced similarly to TurboTax.

Estimated value to an individual

  • Save time and money generally ranging to between $200 and over $1,000 per year.
  • Having a return reviewed by a CPA can help make sure you are not missing out on key deductions.
